Eight bodies have been retrieved from Muswii River in Makueni a day after a tragedy involving a sand truck that plunged into the river on Friday.
Confirming the retrieval, Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili said that the eight bodies have been recovered following the river tragedy that shook the county on Friday.
However, the Deputy Governor also said that about ten people were still missing and that about 14 people had been rescued alive immediately after the truck fell into the water.
According to witnesses, the lorry was ferrying building material when people jumped onto it as it attempted to cross the flooded river hoping that the weight will be enough to help them cross the flooded road.
However, the lorry was overpowered by strong waves of the river and plunged into the water carrying more than a dozen of people several spotted seated on top of the lorry as it crossed the waters on the shallow.
Communities living close to the swollen river were also urged to report any bodies spotted floating on top of the water to ensure progress in the rescue efforts and retrieving of the missing bodies.
