Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence about Kiptum’s new World Marathon Record. Kiptum hit the record after running 34 seconds less in Chicago Marathon than Kipchoge who did it in Beijing. Hitting a new high with 2 Hours and 35 seconds.
Speaking during the receiving of the Princess of Asturias Award for sports in Oviedo, Spain, Kipchoge said he was not surprised by Kiptum breaking his record.
“I was not surprised about him breaking the world record. I was happy to see the record being broken. I am looking forward to seeing records being broken because I have shown them (athletes) the way. I broke the record two times. I have run 2:00:25, I have broken the two-hour barrier. I have done it in a good way as an example to the next generation”
Having dominated the long distance track for quite sometime with two times world records to his name, Eliud Kipchoge says he is not yet done.
Kipchoge who is in Spain to receive an award for his outstanding achievements. Both as a long-distance runner and the work he does through his foundation. To promote education and environmental protection says he is now focused on Paris.
“I will be the happiest on earth to win an Olympic medal for the third time, back-to-back-to-back. It’s about making history; it’s about inspiring a generation.”
Paris Olympics will be important for Kipchoge who is set to set the bar at exemplary heights. If he goes ahead to win in Paris, he will be the first Athlete to win 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals. Having done it in Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. This will be about his legacy.
However, the legacy won’t come on a silver platter as Kiptum is also eyeing the Olympics as his dream. After smashing Kipchoge’s Record, it remains unclear whether the 38 year old will keep up with the 23 year old.
