Approximately 8,000 Non governmental organisations in Kenya are yet to submit financial documents and statements as the clock for the 21-day ultimatum ticks.
This comes after the government issued a directive through the NGOs Coordination Board that requires all NGOs to remit their financial statements to the government on December 14th.
According to the Executive Director Mutuma Nkanata, the NGOs are yet to remit and submit financial documents and statements as the deadline fast approaches which could mean closure and in turn more kenyans who work in those institutions to lose their jobs.

Going by the notice issued on December 14th,,the 21 day ultimatum is expected to end in January 8th 2024 and with most NGOs expected to close for Christmas, the lack of compliance through 20s will mean non-compliance even though the deadline will still be effective.
According to Nkanata, the reports are about to give a record on what the NGOs are doing in the country and their annual financial reports failure to which they’ll be deregistered.

“We have about 8,000 who haven’t submitted their returns. If they do not do that, we are going to deregister them and strike them out of our register. What we are telling the NGOs is that those who have not complied, should do so per our regulations, submit their annual returns, update their offices. They should also tell us what they’re doing, and submit reports about their programs.”
Previously, this wasn’t a requirement for NGOs and the transition has raised questions. However, the extreme will translate to more kenyans earning a living through these NGOs losing their jobs as the job market situation keep worsening.
This comes as the government aim to increase the tax base to net more revenue. Thus these companies that previously were exempted from the same will have to comply of close down as a result.
