Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the introduction of new number plates to be issued to select motor vehicles
According to the Cabinet Secretary, the green-coloured number plates that will be issued to motorists who own electric vehicles for easier identification on roads by other road users.
Speaking during the launch of the e-mobility policy at KICC on Wednesday, March 27, Murkomen said that the new number plates will be used to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles in the country even as the government plans to introduce more incentives for environment-friendly technology.

“We are doing this to encourage them. We also have incentives. We will talk to governors to give priority to parking spaces for EV vehicles which will be cheaper.”
However, addressing concerns on the current users of green number plates that are used vehicles belonging to county enforcement officers known as kanjos, Murkomen said that they will have to apply for new number plates.
“All vehicles that are EVs will be given green number plates. Those that have been having the green one need to apply for another one.”
Addressing the issue of electronic vehicle infrastructure such as charging stations, the CS said that the Ministry would install some charging systems at his Ministry headquarters so that his Ministry could lead in the uptake of electric vehicles.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the technology will be rolled out by the government to spread out so that more kenyans get access to these electronic vehicles and places to charge their vehicles in due course.
Current data by the government show that there are nearly 3,000 registered electric vehicles in the country and more are expected as the Ministry of Transport continue to facilitate their infrastructure further.
