An event organised by the Co-Creation Hub and GIZ Make-IT in Africa on Thursday has opened doors for top minds in Kenyan Universities. University of Nairobi students put their best foot forward. Mariam Salim, a medical student, was number one with her project titled Hygiea – derived from the word hygiene.
Securing the second position is Nafisa Agil, a medical research student who presented the Deaf Health project. This seeks to better the lives of deaf people in kenya and beyond. Third came Arakovina, a project which uses saliva to detect breast cancer. CareConnect also that eases the lives of expectant mothers representing the University of Nairobi.
Riara followed suit. Presenting Two projects, the Riara University students emerged in positions five and six at the UNI:INNOVATORS Startups-in-Residence Program.
Elijah Cheruiyot emerged 5th with his project EJ_SmartFarm_254, an Internet of Things based smart farming system that incorporates a couple of sensors to provide insightful data to the farmers. Carol Emmanuela and Allan Obat presented a project dubbed the Grey Water Blue Project.
The project seeks to address water scarcity and stress in Kenya and beyond. This is by incorporating a device that recycles grey water (wastewater from sinks, laundry and swimming pools). Thus making water readily available and affordable for all. This will reduce the problem of water scarcity and stress.
The programme runs across Nigeria, Kenya and Namibia behun this year running through to 2024. Their mission and vision is to drive technological advancement and innovation within Higher Education Institutions for a better society throughout Africa.
Stakeholders from both education and tech were in attendance for the innovative event. The innovators will get a chance to partner with entrepreneurs in various sectors to ensure penetration of their ideas into the market.
Speaking at the event, the Riara University VC encouraged to partner and encourage students to be innovative. This is in a bid to solve African problems through innovation.
The students will get a chance to travel to Germany “to exchange knowledge” with leading researchers in different fields and sectors
