Kenya Kwanza’s method of lowering the cost of living and commodities in general has caused uproar among kenyans especially on various social media platforms.
Coming a day after the Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority reduced the price of fuel for a period of one month starting today, kenyans have expressed concerns on how the government is taking them for a ride.
According to netizens, the government is using a method whereby they increase commodity prices by a certain ammount then reduce by half that ammount then claim to have reduced the cost of living.

For instance, after scrappinoff subsidies in September, the government increased price of petrol by 20 shillings to 179.30 (about $1.50) per litre while diesel and kerosene prices are up by 20 and 25 shillings respectively.
Since then, the prices of fuel has been on an upward graph with kenyans raising alarm over the high cost of living that comes with high cost of fuel. This saw the fuel hit a new high of Ksh. 217 on Petrol and Ksh. 203 on diesel.
However, in the latest review by EPRA, the reduction was at 5 shillings and 2shillings on Petrol and Diesel respectively. Kenyans took their frustrations online claiming the reduction isn’t significant enough.

Globally, the price for Petrol, Diesel & Kerosene has dropped by 17%, 15% & 14% respectively since September this year. But EPRA’s review does not match the global stage as the reduction is insignificant. They added that the price coukd have fell well under the Ksh. 200 mark to be significant.
This has caused an uproar as to the method that the government is using in lowering cost of living. The doubling when it comes to increase in commodity price and the insignificant reduction of the same price has angered kenyans.
However, the review will be effective from December 15th to January 14th 2024 and kenyans hope that changes will be made within the month to achieve a significant drop in the price of fuel.
