The Ministry of Education has issued new directives to both parents and school administrators ahead of schools re-opening next week.
Through a statement on Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu directed that schools affected by floods to remain closed as others proceed with Re-Opening.

According to the CS, the affected schools will remain closed as the government plans for alternative infrastructure to facilitate learning.
“In the meantime, the management of these schools should come up with strategies to recover lost time when learning resumes.”
However, both school heads and parents were also urged by the Ministry to ensure the safety of the pupils and students even as schools resume amid the flooding situation in the country.
Addressing the floods displaced people using various institutions as their shelter, the ministry directed that these people seek alternative shelter places as the schools seek to re-open.
“Some of the people displaced from their homes due to the devastating effect of the rains have sought refuge in schools. Such schools may not be able to continue with the regular academic activities.”
Among measures recommended by the ministry included resource sharing among neighbouring schools and the use of multi-grade and multi-shift models of providing education.
The Ministry also directed that Regional education officers to come up with more measures and ensure learning goes on without disruptions in accordance with the region that they are.

“County Education Boards (CEBs) are directed to convene urgent meetings to assess the situation and submit comprehensive reports to the Cabinet Secretary by May 10th 2024.”
