Months ago, North Eastern teachers demanding transfers from the area due to insecurity were Interdicted for failing to report to duty.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia has explained the reason why the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) could not give in to their demands and instead served them interdiction letters. This she said during a senate summon initiated by Nandi Senator, Samson Cherargei.

Macharia claims that the approval of transfer of the teachers could have caused a mass exodus of other teachers.
The CEO said that the commision was aware of only one insecurity incident that affected a teacher on July 14th. The teacher who is not a local was killef by Al-Shabaab militia at Wargadud police station where he had sought refuge.
Due to this incident, a total of 223 teachers in the region stormed the commision headquarters on August requesting a transfer due to insecurity. This forced TSC to a meeting with the teachers.
In the meeting, they directed the teachers to return to their working stations and make an application as provided by the CORT.
Working with three county directors, one regional director and other security agencies, TSC ensured that the teachers are accorded with the security they need. She insisted that only one insecurity case was reported and the situation was under control.
According to Macharia, Only 94 teachers reported to work while the 129 teacgers declined. This forced the commision to take the interdiction decision on North Eastern teachers who failed to report to work.
If the commission had given in to the teachers demands according to Macharia, the move could have caused a mass exodus with teachers forcing out. This could have crippled the teaching anf learning process. Therefore, the decision had to be made for the greater good of the region.
