United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Senator is set to present the bill to introduce seven year term limit for the President in senate for its first reading.
According to reports, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei is set to propose the introduction of a seven year term limit for not only the President but also all elected leaders in Kenya.
Dubbed as the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2024 sponsored by Cherargei, the bill will see the President, MPs, MCAs and governors to have their terms extended for seven years for service delivery.

“The Bill proposes to amend Article 136 of the Constitution, which provides for election of the President, to increase the term of President from five years to seven years.”
Further, it creates the office of the Prime Minister who will be selected by the President from among Members Of Parliament similar to the proposals in the National Dialogue Committee and the Building Bridges Initiative reports.
The Prime Minister shall be the leader of the largest party or coalition of parties in Parliament with the bill set to increase the parliamentary role of the Senate by addressing the issues that have hampered the implementation of the constitution.
On matters devolution, the bill proposes removal of a governor or deputy by Senate through impeachment can only be challenged at the Supreme Court and ruled within 30 days unlike currently where they are challenged at the High Court.

The Bill seeks to strengthen devolution by aligning the roles and functions of Parliament and all entities at the national and county levels of government in a manner that would promote the effective administration of the devolved system of governance
