The Teacher’s Service Commission has announced over 36,000 promotion opportunities for teachers. Nancy Macharia, the CEO has urged teachers to broaden their job application from their home counties.
Speaking in Mombasa during the Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association, the CEO said that the government is doing everything to improve teacher welfare. This includes allocating funding for the promotion of teachers.
“We thank the government for providing Ksh 1 Billion for the financial year 2023/24 for the promotion of teachers. The commission recently advertised 36,505 vacancies for teacher promotion, out of which 17,914 posts will go to primary school teachers across all the grades.”

This shows the government’s commitment in ensuring that this process is a success. According to Macharia, the last allocation for such an exercise was in 2011. That makes the difference in this recent funding.
The CEO also noted a shortage in some positions such as Special Needs Education. She urged all those invited for interviews in December 4th to show up without failure.
In addition, the CEO urged applicants to apply for positions advertised even outside their home counties. This will prevent shortages in some regions while others have overwhelming numbers. She said that a total of 1,123 positions were not filled in the recently concluded recruitment exercise.
According to statistics, the following regions had positions left vacant and not filled. Rift Valley 45, Kajiado: 5, samburu had 9 left and Turkana had 31 unfilled positions.
North Eastern had the highest number of unfilled teachers with 795 vacancies still open. Mandera having the highest with 385 vacancies still open. Wajir with 211 and Garissa with 199.
Other regions that experience shortages of applications include the Coast region, Central region and the Eastern region. All of which recorded a significant number of blanks in the recruitment exercise for the new teacher promotion vacancies.
