The Teachers Service Commission has decided to interdict teachers who were pushing to be transferred from North Eastern region. This comes after teachers complained about insecurity in the region.
A directive had been made that all teachers to report to work on September. But the teachers felt that their grievances had not been heard and decided to hold to their course.
Interdiction will have these teachers earn half the salary. This will be followed by disciplinary actions that may even lead to dismissal. This has not been received well by the affected teachers as they claim they will camp take the battle outside the commission’s headquarters.

These teachers claim they pay for protection by police when travelling by road and the cost of flying to North Eastern is expensive for them.
“Tunalipa police reservist 1500 ndio tuchungwe … by road hauwezi travel ni 1,100kms na air transport is KSh.12,000 we can’t afford”
Among the reasons cited are:
- Insecurity due to constant attacks by Al Shabaab militia.
- Hostility from the local community who discriminate them because of their ethnicity.
TSC hasn’t bothered to address these issues.
“TSC has failed to listen to us and do as per our request. That is what is causing desertion. I should be in school teaching because today is a working day, but nobody can work where your life is compromised” lamented the affected teacher.
One teacher recounted how he was lured by TSC to naming his colleagues who had not reported to work. He claims he thought that transfers were finally going to be made.
“I personally was called at the TSC and was informed to make only a list of those who had not gone back. Then after I made the list, to my surprise, the transfers changed to interdiction. That is why we are really agitated and confused.”
The affected teachers claim to start their protest outside TSC offices on Monday.
