Sondu is a small town in the boarder of the Kisumu and Kericho counties. This are counties that host two major ethnic groups in kenya that are currently on opposite political devide. Anything can trigger clashes because of their political affiliation.
Sondu has witnessed clashes in the past few days with Three people confirmed dead and scores injured. This is after raiders attacked the East kadiang’a location in Nyakach Sub county armed with crude weapons to cause havoc in the wee hours of the night.
Clashes continue today after Kisumu County Governor, Prof Anyang Nyongo condemned the attacks. In a statement, Nyong’o said “It is unfortunate that on the eve of the president’s visit to our region, some upstarts last night instigated ethnic clashes in Sondu along the Kisumu-Kericho border”
According to a witness, clashes were sparked by a suspected thief who was roughed up and killed by a mob in the area sparking a series of vengeful attackes from his people.
Business at the Sondu town remain paralysed for days now because of the attacks and more people seek refuge far from the town to avoid the chaos. Police have been deployed in the area to restore calm and orderliness
Kisumu County Commissioner, Hussein Alassow Hussein together with the Kisumu County Security Team are working with their counterparts in Kericho county to ensure that normalcy resumes as fast as possible.
He also added that security agents should work to apprehend those responsible for the attacks to ensure that justice is served to the affected families.
Nyabondo hospital continues to receive victims of the attacks with arrow wounds and few cases are being handled in the facility and those in critical conditions have been referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital.
