Former Kenya National Union Of Teachers KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has said that the 8-4-4 system was the best system ever designed in Kenya. This is Sossion’s take on 8-4-4
This comes after the last cohort of learners on the 8-4-4 system sat for the KCPE exams that the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu released yesterday.
“I dare tell Kenyans that it is wrong to condemn 8-4-4 that it was merely exam-oriented. That is what was engrained in 8-4-4. A very good education system will have a strong examination system.”

On Sossion’s take on 8-4-4, he claimed that the achievements of the 39 year existence of system cannot be compared to any other. Therefore Signaling an oppose towards the Competency Based Curriculum that has been rolled out by Education Ministry.
“That is why the products of 8-4-4 have scored first-class in Ivy League universities and are very competitive in the world. For me, we really would need a proper exit evaluation report for 8-4-4. Among all the education models that Kenya has developed, 8-4-4 was the best and to me. I celebrate it as an educator.”
The system was first introduced in kenya in 1985 and has seen over 26 Million students pass through it. The System comprised of 8 Primary school years, 4 high-school years and 4 tertiary education years.
According to opposers of 8-4-4 system said the system relied too much on children passing examinations. This is with a focus on Maths and sciences but left out their individual capabilities and talents.
The Competency Based Curriculum looks to correct that and ensure that talents are nurtured to ensure an all-round student development.
This marked the end of an era as the last learners received their results. The top Student being Michael Warutere who scored a total of 428 marks out of 500.
