A section of kenyans have staged protests in Nairobi CBD today demanding housing levy implementation by the government after being declared unconstitutional.
According to reports, the protesters are majorly drawn from the jua kali sector who say they are set to benefit from President William Ruto’s action plan through housing Levy implementation. They argued that if the project fails to take off, their livelihoods would be affected in a major way.
They claimed that the main reason for the protests is heading to present a petition in Parliament for the implementation of the levy for their own good.

“Housing Levy is the cure for better housing,” one of the placards read, “Do not take away our livelihood. Tujenge nyumba tuimarishe uchumi wetu (Let’s build houses and grow our economy),”
This action has sparked a debate online with a section of kenyans believing that the move was allegedly sponsored by the government of the day. This was because of the presence of the police who in normal occasions will disperse the crowds.
However, in this scenario, the police escorted the protesters in what they termed peaceful protests in support of the government to ensure implementation of the Housing Levy.

The Housing Levy was declared unconstitutional by the court few months ago due to the failure of meeting certain constitutional obligations by the law. However, President William Ruto has vowed to implement it using all means necessary.
In a past public address, the President said that he will use all powers at his disposal to ensure that the government projects, most of whom have been flagged by the courts are implemented. He also warned those who oppose government agenda through the courts that he will use the sword he was given during swearing in to “slash them”, a move that Omtatah claimed was targeted to him.
