A school matron from St John’s Girls Secondary has been exposed by CCTV footage setting a dormitory on fire in Kilifi County.
One Irene Kerubo aged about 43 years has been arrested following reliable information that she could be the one who caused the fire which burnt down the upper floor of Elgon Dormitory at St. Johns Girls Secondary School on 31.01.2024 at around 21.12hrs.
According to reports, Irene Kerubo is a matron at the School and was captured by CCTV entering the Dormitory at 21.07hrs, moments before the fire broke out.
The CCTV footage shows the matron leaving in a hurry, literally running from the Dormitory at 21.12hrs. After nearly 5minutes of her stay in the Dorm, an inferno is then seen engulfing the Dorm less than two minutes after she exits.

Following the discoveries, Irene Kerubo is held at the Kaloleno Police Station pending arrangement in the Kaloleni Law Courts.
This comes after recent fire incidents at various schools that have caused alarm in the education sector. Meanwhile, students of Riomego Boarding Primary School in Nyamira County are yet again counting losses on Saturday after fire razed their domitory for the third time within 72 hours.
The school reportedly experienced fire incidents on Thursday at 3:00 pm, while another dormitory caught fire on the same day at 7 pm.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, February 1, the Kenya Red Cross said the fire was reported at around 3 pm.

“Riomego Boarding School in Nyamira County is facing a fire emergency. Our response team is actively engaged in response efforts and working to address the situation.”
Several leaders have called for thorough investigations into the recent fire incidents, which has now left learners with losses of their properties and fear.
