President William Ruto has revealed that the United Democratic Party (UDA) will field a female Presidential Running mate in future.
According to Ruto, the female Presidential running mate move will align with his vision to enhance gender parity in the UDA Party.
“We must as a party lead in front and we must make it in the roots that when Rigathi Gachagua and myself when we reach the future and agree between ourselves.”
However, the President did not reveal when this will happen or did not link his words to the 2027 general elections that threatened to devide the party on whether they should back Rigathi Gachagua or Ndindi Nyoro.
“We must also agree that going forward, if a man is a candidate for president in our party, the woman must be the running mate. And if a woman is the candidate, then the man can be the running mate.”
According to Ruto, this will be the new party changes would also narrow down to other political positions including the gubernatorial position to ensure all positions get female representation.
“We must also cascade it down to the governors and we must be intentional about it or it will never happen. I know fellow party leaders in other pirates will agree with us because I am sure the party leader in Wiper supported Wavinya, the party leader in ODM supported Gladys and all the other party leaders supported their women candidates.”

Ruto, while emphasising significance of gender equality in party politics, he stated that the move was not aimed at diminishing male efforts in the political realm. He called on party leaders in other political parties to uphold the same in a bid to boost female participation in Kenyan politics.
