President William Ruto has directed the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to effect the 40% salary increase for police officers.
The National Police Service, National Youth Service and the Kenya Prisons will be the beneficiaries of the 40% increment of the salaries.
This comes following a report by the National Taskforce on Improvement of Terms and Conditions of Service and other Reforms for members of the services. The taskforce had recommended the increment of the salaries to be spread over three years.
Among the recommendations of the taskforce include review of pay, better medical cover for the members and welfare of all the members.
The taskforce headed by the Former Chief Justice, David Maraga has done due diligence for over one year and came up with the report that was presented to the President.
President William Ruto said that some of the recommendations needed parliament approval. While others could be implemented immediately. Just like the 40% salary increment, directing SRC to do so.
“I assure our policemen and women of our commitment to improving the police service, including their remuneration and other terms of service.” Said the President.
The report also suggests that no police officer should remain in one station for over three years. Also encouraged the force to have two entry points being the cadet and constable levels.
However, corruption was cited as the major challenge in the police sector which recommended incorporation of incentives for police and prison officers especially the lower cadres to address professionalism, motivation and retention thus salary increase for police.
