Machakos County leaders have vowed to defend and stand with those who lost their property in the Mavoko demolitions. This they did by passing a motion for the County Assembly to be enjoined in the appeal against Portland Cement Company.
The motion also seeks compensation for the property damaged in the demolitions. In addition, administration of the Syokimau and Mlolongo wards’ land issues to be done in Machakos. This has been done in Nairobi all along.
A definitive boundary between Nairobi and Machakos was also a topic of discussion. The leaders are asking for a clear boundary to avoid administration clashes.
This move was applauded the move saying “As a County Government we will do everything to ensure justice for our people and the safeguarding of their basic Human Rights.”
County Assembly Deputy Speaker, Stephen Mwanthi has expressed his concern on the silence of the Deputy President. “We have seen recently the Deputy President in Nakuru speaking on an incident similar to the one in Athi River. We haven’t seen him speak for the people of Athi River. So we are asking ourselves and we are wondering,is there a difference between the residents of Nakuru and residents of Machakos. If he saw evil being done to Nakuru residents, then what is happening in Machakos is also evil.”
This comes after Azimio battalion led by Raila Odinga were blocked from accessing the site. The officer in charge told the Azimio leaders to find another venue for their meeting. Ha also described their entry as interruption.
Raila described what’s going on in Mavoko as inhumane and a violation of human rights. “What has gone on here in Mavoko this past few days is not just inhumane. It is ungodly. It’s a gross violation of human rights”
Portland Cement Company has also released a notice seeking to sell 907 acres. Priority being given to those already occupying the land.
