The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has disagreed with how the Teachers Service Commission has handled the Recruitment of JSS interns.
This comes after TSC released a statement saying that teachers working as interns will have to work for an extra year for them to be recruited on permanent pensionable terms.
Director of Teachers Staffing at the TSC, Antonina Lentoijoni explained that the current 46,000 teachers will add an extra year. These are teachers currently teaching as interns.
According to the director, letters of extension are expected in December for the additional one year. This applies to interns who started on February 1st. Clarifying that the September group that started on 1st September are exempted from receiving the letters.
KUPPET through the Secretary-General Akello Misori has disagreed with the idea saying that TSC must and should confirm the JSS interns.
Misori therefore expressed concerns as to why the government through TSC don’t want to start processing their employment with their contract yet to expire at the end of 2023.
The Secretary General in addition said that it’s unfair to add extra year for interns while undergoing the conditions they are in. These includes payment of taxes from the salary they are receiving, housing levy and unpredictable working conditions.

TSC has however insisted that recruitment of JSS interns will be done after the interns work at their current positions for two years before the commision reviews their applications for the permanent and pensionable terms.
However, the commision is expected to send letters of extension to the affected teachers in December for contract renewal and agreement.
