The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has now offered to give students who scored Y grade for exam malpractice a second chance.
This comes after the Presidential Working Party recommended so in its Educational Reforms report to the President through the Kenya National Examinations Council (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
According to the Bill, the affected students will be allowed to appeal to the Examination Council about the cancellation 30 days after results are published.
“A candidate whose examination results have been cancelled may apply to the Council within thirty days after the release of the results for a review of the Council’s decision.”
While in the past students had to use the judicial system to seek redress, going forward, KNEC will accept requests from aggrieved candidates which must be made in writing.
“The Council shall upon receiving an application, consider the application and respond, in writing, to the applicant within thirty days explaining why he/she is seeking a review by the council.”
Students will also be accorded the courtesy of being told why their request for review was rejected by the Council if at all their application is unsuccessful.
The same will be applied to successfull applications where the Examination Council will receive communication of the same in writing.

Additionally, KNEC will require the applicant to appear before the council within 90 days after the successful application for review.
“Where the Council is satisfied that the candidate has not been involved in any examination irregularities, the Council shall release the results to the candidate.”
The Bill is currently being subjected to public participation before being presented to Parliament for debate where it will go through the process before being implemented by the council.
