Kelvin Kiptum has broken the men’s marathon world record and runs 2:00:35 to win the 2023 #ChicagoMarathon. He takes the mantle from Kenya’s Finest, Eliud Kipchoge who has been holding that record.
Kipchoge hit the record last year at the Berlin marathon and Kelvin Kiptum has hit the mark by finishing with 34 seconds.
Having said recently how he is sure he can run in two hours, Kiptum has walked the talk by breaking the world record and he is now the new record holder for the men’s marathon.
The 23-year old Kenyan has run three career marathons — all in the last 10 months — and posted three of the six fastest times in history — 2:01:53 in Valencia, Spain, last December, followed by 2:01:25 in London in April.
Three kenyans have been ranked among the Top five in the just completed Chicago Marathon with Kelvin Kiptum leading at 2:00:35, followed by Benson Kipruto who came second finishing at the 2:04:02 mark and wrapping up for Kenyans in top five is John Korir finishing fourth with a mark at 2:05:09.
Kenyans continue flying their flag high in various categories in the Chicago olympics and they are just getting started. More medals are expected to be bagged following their expertise in the long distance marathons.
Speaking at the finish line, Kipruto said “A world record was not in my mind today… but I knew one day, one time I would be a world record holder” His determination has led to this huge success in his marathon debut in Chicago and hopes to bag more medals as his career progresses.
At the finish line, Kipruto was welcomed with a hug from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski congratulating him for this amazing milestone. It’s amazing to see Kenya still holding the world record for the marathon despite the title changing hands.
