Kenya has paused the deployment of 1000 police officers to Haiti following the recent developments in the Caribbean country.
According to Principle Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei, the decision comes about following the resignation of Haiti’s Prime Minister on Monday, March 11, 2024
Following the Prime Minister’s resignation, Sing’oei explains that there is no ground or anchor for the mission in Haiti due to the lack of a political structure or administration.

Reports indicate that Kenya will therefore wait for the installation of a recognised constitutional authority before further decisions on the deployment are made.
“The deal they signed with the president still stands, although the deployment will not happen now because definitely, we will require a sitting government to also collaborate with.”
This comes after a crisis meeting held between the 15-member Caribbean Community regional bloc known as CARICOM that saw the resignation of Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
This was due to the demands that were set by Haiti gang leaders who wanted Ariel Henry to resign before they cease to attack government institutions and give room for dialogue.
The CARICOM meeting resolved to appoint a seven-member presidential panel that would pick a new interim prime minister to hold the fort and select two observers alongside the Prime Minister who would help in governance as well as the transition to elections.

“I think we can all agree that Haiti is on the brink of disaster. We must take quick and decisive action here in this room to bring the situation under control and to return the country to the Haitian people.”
Kenya now waits for the interim government to be put in place before the deployment of kenya police officers resumes to ensure that they help in restoring normalcy in Haiti.
