The High Court has finally issued a statement on the way forward on Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli’s conviction after he presented himself before Justice Lawrence Mugambi.
In a conviction of six months that was to start today, Justice Lawrence Mugambi announced the suspension of Masengeli’s sentence for seven more days to allow Masengeli to apologise and explain why he ignored the summons a record seven times.
“Mr Gilbert Masengeli can avoid the sentence if he complies with the direction to obey the court summons. I therefore suspend the sentence for 7 days only. He can redeem himself by availing himself before the court in person.”

Following the decision, Justice Mugambi adjourned the court proceeding for 30 minutes after which Masengeli would be allowed to comment on the case before further directions are issued on the matter.
The appearance of Masengeli in court comes just hours after two brothers and an activist that he was set to explain their whereabouts were released in the middle of the night before they found their way home.
The three abductees, Bob Njagi, Jamil Longton and his brother Aslam Longton were speculated to have been abducted by police officers as filed by Law Society of Kenya, forcing Judge Lawrence Mugambi to summon the then Acting IG Masengeli in court to explain on the same.

The case however took a turn when Masengeli was accompanied by Attorney General Dorcas Oduor who represented him in court today, explaining that Masengeli was attending national duties outside Nairobi during the dates of summons.
