The Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said that the disbursement of HELB funds for first years will begin on Tuesday, November 7th.
Speaking to the media on Friday, the cabinet Secretary insisted on the need of students to confirm their details in order to ensure correct disbursement.
In a statement, the secretary said that the ministry has finished processing loans for First Year students. This means that the university students as well as TVETs will receive funds under the new education model starting next week.
“The Higher Education Loans Boards has finalised the processing of loans for First Year students in universities and TVETs under the New Higher Education Funding Model.
“The Ministry wishes to inform successful applicants the funds will be disbursed to their respective universities and student accounts beginning Tuesday, November 7, 2023.” he stated
This comes after student unrest in various universities, the latest being Machakos University. The students turned to the streets on November 2nd to demand immediate release of the funds.
The students caused havoc in Machakos town barricading roads and lit bonfires that paralysed traffic along the major roads.
Students of multimedia University also went to the streets early October blocking Magadi Road. the main entry into Ongata Rongai Town in Kajiado County to call the government to act.
Education minister said that students who had applied for the loans to go to the Higher Education Financing Portal to ensure that their bank details, as provided in the loan application, were accurate.
The move aims to ensure that students’ funds are allocated to the correct bank accounts.
The students have complained of harsh conditions since admission to university due to delays in disbursement of the funds. Parents have also faced a huge burden regarding the same.
