The National Assembly Health Committee Chairperson Dr. Robert Pukose has revealed the expiry date of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) cards.
According to the Chairman, the NHIF card Expiry date is set on December 2024 as the Ministry of Health is in the process of implementing the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Speaking during an interview on Spice FM on Wednesday morning, Pukose clarified that Kenyans will be able to access NHIF services throughout the year before transitioning to the new Social Healthcare Insurance Fund (SHIF).

However, the chairman said that contributions to the NHIF cards will continue for those who wish to seek medical services using NHIF till December when the cards will cease to work on hospital payments.
The Chairman also revealed the government’s plan to set up a Social Health Authority (SHA) that will ensure smooth transition from NHIF to SHIF such that patients will not feel the impact of transition.
“There are no individuals who have been hired for the SHA, what has happened is that there has been a gazettement of the board of the SHA, but none has been hired.”
However, he noted that there was a transition committee that was gazetted by the Health Cabinet Secretary which was mandated to facilitate the transition and report to Parliament.

The transition committee is also obligated to issue progressive reports on its operations on matters of assets, liabilities and functionality for 6 months and a final report at the end of its mandate.
However, according to Pukose, the Social Health Insurance Fund deductions have not been made yet as the government is still setting everything in place before starting deducting. Kenyans are however expected to do a self registration to the SHIF according to Health CS Susan Nakhumincha.
