Meru Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) passed a motion of impeachment against Kawira Mwangaza. The embattled governor’s fate now lies in the hands of the Senate.
A statement issued on Tuesday, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi stated that Mwangaza’s impeachment motion will be heard by the plenary. This is an opposite of what happened previously when the governor was first impeached.
“The impeachment motion against Kawira Mwangaza, Governor of Meru County. Brought to the Senate by the County Assembly of Meru will be heard and determined by way of a Plenary.”
During the first impeachment, a special senate committee was convened that decided that Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment had no solid grounds. This led to her reinstatement as the governor of Meru. This now is the second time in a span of one year that this is happening to Mwangaza.
“The matter will be heard and determined within 10 days. There are a total of 7 charges against the Governor.” Kingi said in a statement.
This means that the senate inclufing its ALL members will have to rule on the motion against the governor. She will have a chance to appear before the floor of the house tondefend herself against allegations levied against her.
There are two possible outcomes of this motion. Should the senate overturn the impeachment motion, Mwangaza will resume office and no similar motion will be introduced until after three months.
Should the Senate uphold the motion from the Meru MCAs, she will vacate office and senate speaker will notify the Meru County Assembly. The deputy governor will therefore take over office as the new Meru County governor.
Meanwhile, Kawira’s hope lies in the balance as she will have to face all senators in a bid to convince them of her innocence.
