Five pupils have been confirmed dead by drowning during school fun trip. The pupils from Arap Moi Primary school in Uasin Gishu county were having fun in an amusement park in Eldoret. The incident occurred approximately 5PM.
According to reports, the pupils took turn to ride boats and unfortunately, one capsized in the man made lake meant for fun activities. It is sadi that the oupilshad gone to steam off ahead of the KCPE exams set to start tomorrow on Monday 30th October.
A total of six pupils were aboard in the boat and only one survived and was rushed to hospital for specialised treatment. The deceased were taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital pending investigations and burial arrangements.
Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu has released a statement saying appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is completed. He added that his ministry and that of interior will collaborate to conduct a thorough and conclusive Investigation. He urged parents teachers and guardians to avoid exposing candidates to risks especially during exam time.
“Appropriate action will be taken on the basis of the findings of the investigations. Teachers, parents and guardians are advised to avoid exposing learners to risky activities and environments, especially during the national examinations season.”
Sending condolences to the families of the deceased, Machogu called for calmness for those affected by the tragedy. He said that the government will do everything possible to ensure the safety of candidates. Not only in Uasin Gishu but also across the country during the 2023 national examinations season.
According to a police report, five pupils were in class eight and one was in class six. All class eight pupils drowned while the class six pupil survived and is under medication.
Teachers and parents are urged to keep a close watch on their children. Only engage in activities with a professional. Such an incident could’ve been avoided if there was enough professionals to conduct rescue operation.
