Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir on Monday revealed the reason behind the nationwide power blackout that rocked the country on Sunday evening.
Speaking during a presser, Davis Chirchir said that the nationwide Blackout was as a result of an overload between Kisumu and Muhoroni line that caused the powerlines to drop.
CS Chirchir further revealed that his ministry had taken measures to ensure that they find a long lasting solution to the power outages. Among the solutions, the CS rellvealed that the government had taken a loan from South Korea and floated a tender for the construction of a new power line for Western Kenya.

“We are aware that there was a power blackout yesterday, and the question we are now asking is, why so frequently? It is a challenge we are ashamed of as a country, and we must address it. We know the problem. We learnt it was an overload and we felt good because we can fix that problem very quickly unlike when it is a hit.”
For three straight months, the country has experienced three power blackouts that have raised eyebrows with major institutions like Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other entries like ports being on the spot for power failure.
Davis Chirchir now says that the government is working to ensure that such an incident doesn’t happen because unlike before, they now identified the problem and they are fixing it.
The CS also noted that the country has not had any major electricity system upgrades for the past sox years and they are working to ensure they get up to date systems that have minimal errors to reduce blackouts.
