Chaos were witnessed in senate this evening during the debate on the affordable housing bill that was presented to senate after going through parliament.
This came after a section of Azimio Senators confronted the House chair and acting Speaker, Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, demanding he accord them more time to debate the Affordable Housing Bill.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ aired his frustrations for not receiving adequate time to table questions over several amendments to the bill.
Kajwang requested that the chair should accord him 15 minutes to give his views on the amendment without interruption on the bill that was on its third and final reading in Senate.
However, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot rose on a point of order saying that Kajwang’s request was disregarding the rules of the House.
“I take great exception with the conduct of Kajwang’, if it was another senator, I would assume that he doesn’t know the rules of this House and what we do in Third Reading, he was cheeky.”
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna defended Kajwang’ by claiming that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senators sought to speed up the process to pass the bill into law.
A confrontation ensued with Azimio senators demanding to be heard even if they don’t have numbers. They demanded to have their say as the majority have their way.

However, the speaker was able to calm the members down after which 27 members of senate voted for the housing bill while 10 members opposed it making the bill sail through the senate.
The Affordable Housing Bill will now head to President Ruto’s desk where he will be required to put his signature to confirm it. Once he appends his signature it will become law.
