Lang’ata Women prison is reportedly on fire this evening as firefighters are at the scene trying to extinguish the fire that has caused panic in Kenya’s women prison.
Reporting the incident, the Kenya Red Cross in a statement said efforts to extinguish the fire are currently ongoing at the facility.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established and the total damages that have been incurred still unknown. However, measures have been put in place to ensure that the fire doesn’t spread more.

The prison sits at the heart of Nairobi hosting approximately 700 women who have been convicted of various crimes and more than 40 children under the age of four who live with their mothers inside the facility.
According to reports, the fire started around 6.00 PM on Monday on one section of the prison with the reports on whether the inmates and childrens whonreside at the facility safe yet to be relayed.
Red cross has confirmed that rescue operations are underway and more details will be provided on the cause and the extent of the fire.

“A fire outbreak has been reported at Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi. Efforts to extinguish the fire are currently underway.,” Red Cross posted on X formerly Twitter.
Reporting after containing the fire, Kenya red cross said that the fire had been contained but seven staff quarters were affected due to the fire. Evaluation of the items is underway.
“The fire has been contained, thanks to the efforts of the County Fire Team and Kenya Red Cross first responders.
Seven staff quarters have been affected.Ongoing assessments are underway to evaluate the extent of the damage and plan for recovery support.”
