Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has come out to address the ongoing doctors’ strike after saveral kenyans raised eyebrows on his silence.
Atwoli who was speaking during COTU steward’s meeting said that the Doctors strike should be treated as an urgency matter and he has initiated plans to mediate talks between the doctors and the government.
“And this morning I came late because of the doctors’ strike, and now people are saying Atwoli is not talking but we are consulting and I have been in touch with the minister this morning.”

According to Atwoli, the stalemate between the government and the doctors can be squashed only if the two agree on a payment formula that will allow doctors to return to work as agreements are met.
“We cannot make a decision for the government or doctors but we can narrow the gap on issues and get a Return to Work Formula.”
This comes days after doctors rejected the Ksh2.4 billion offer by the government with Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) leaders citing the amount as insufficient.
The Secretary-General announced he had already contacted the Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha concerning the planned talks and he is equally planning to reach out to KMPDU officials for the truce meeting.

However, Atwoli declined to issue COTU’s stand on the matter stating that the organisation would only give its views on the meeting and the two rival parties would then decide on whether to bury the hatchet or not.
The doctors strike that is on it’s way to the third week has seen medical services crippled in the country with kenyans calling on the government to solve the stand off to ensure normalcy in the sector that is critical to lives of kenyans.
