The kenyan government released a gazette notice that directed that documents will bear new prices. Documents ranging from birth certificates to death certificates and passports, both acquiring and renewing will be charged highly. We look at why government increased document charges.

The digital IDs dubbed, Maisha Digital Card will replace existing national IDs. It will contain details such as driver’s licence, birth and death certificates. Children will also be assigned a number at birth, which will provide them with access to government services.
Therefore, for the plan to work, the government had to make the one in place to disadvantage Kenyans. This will cause the people to adopt the new and cheaper way to keep their details. That’s where the maisha card comes in.
The maisha card will store all your information from birth to death digitally. So you don’t have to pay to acquire, to renew any lost document because it will be available digitally. Therefore most people qill prefer the maisha card over the physical and manual registrations. And while the majority have their way, the remaining will be pushed to follow the way.
Therefore, instead of forcing the Digital IDs down the kenyans’ throat, the government has given out an option by disadvantaging the one in place. A plan that seems to be taking shape.
Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok is on record saying the Digital ID will not be mandatory. And to implement the MoU signed between Kenya and United Nation’s Development Programme, a plan like that was inevitable.
The government will claim that Maisha number incorporated all your documents digitally. You don’t need to replace incase of misplacement, you just download the file. You will also be able to get better government services due to system incorporation. Newborns will also not need to pay to get birth certificates. A genius idea to flock kenyans to the digital IDs effortlessly. That’s why government increased document charges.
